Situated at the foot of the Andes Range,
is one of the most beautiful provinces in Argentina. The highest
peaks in America are in this province. Aconcagua is the highest
mountain in the Western Hemisphere. It is a gigantic mass of rock,
6.962 mts. (22.831 feet) high, not picturesque in the traditional
Alpine sense, but magnificent by its size alone. It dominates
the sky and is visible from the Pacific coast, 100 miles away.
Only a few other mountains in the world are higher than Aconcagua
and these are in the Himalayan Range. Though the mountain's summit
crest and radiating ridges are largely windswept free of snow,
large glaciers fill the valleys on all but the southern and western
flanks. Climbing routes are an attraction to many mountaineers
from all over the world.
